It starts with heat, and almost nothing else.
A glassblower's furnace holds molten glass at around 2,000°F, all day, every day. The heat isn't the art. The heat is just what makes the material workable. Everything interesting happens after.

The first move is the gather: rolling the blowpipe in the melt to pick up a glowing blob, the way honey climbs a dipper. The fire gives you nothing on its own. You bring the material, and what you bring decides everything that follows.

For centuries the masters of glass worked on Murano, a small island off Venice. In 1968 a Tacoma-born artist named Dale Chihuly apprenticed at the Venini factory there, and carried those collaborative, team-at-the-bench traditions back across the world.

In 1971 Chihuly and patrons John and Anne Gould Hauberg founded the Pilchuck Glass School in the woods north of Seattle. Artists came for a summer and stayed for a life. The Pacific Northwest quietly became the glass capital of America.

You don't finish it. You reheat it, and work it again.
Glass cools fast and stops moving. So between every shaping pass, the piece goes back into the glory hole to soften: reheat, shape, reheat, shape. Nobody gets the form in a single try. The skill is in the passes.

Then you cool it slowly, so it holds.
A finished piece pulled straight into the air would shatter from the stress. Instead it anneals in the lehr, cooling over hours, sometimes days. It's the unglamorous step that makes the work last. Real skill is the same: it has to set before it's yours.

I spent eleven years in Seattle building software, surrounded by the glass without really seeing it. Then the parallel landed: raw material, heat, breath, patient passes. That's glassblowing. It's also exactly what real work with AI demands, and almost nobody teaches it that way.
